Biochemical Depression

Biochemical depression… is not what it seems

Please read our overview page on Understanding depression which contains important prelimary information for this page.

When we look at biochemical depression, which is a type of depression blamed on not having enough serotonin or noradrenaline going through the neural pathways in the brain and body, we also see a behind-the-scenes mechanism occurring.

Our body and mind are one unit. How many books and research articles have come out from all corners of the globe about the intrinsic connection our mind has with the physical body? And how much evidence do we have that if something goes askew in the mind, it will surely result in an effect on the physical body?

You simply need to look at how everyday emotions affect the physical body:

  • When a person gets scared adrenaline surges through the system, their breathing alters, their skin tingles, they can feel faint and so forth.
  • When we cry we can go literally weak, our breathing becomes heaving like, we can get a headache from crying, crying will deplete our energy and so forth.
  • When a person is angry their eyes bulge, their skin can go red, their breathing becomes intensified, they feel their blood pressure go up, they feel hot and sweaty and so forth.

Our emotional state has a very powerful effect on our physical bodies. Does it not make sense that a prolonged holding onto these type of emotions has a very real and pronounced effect on our body chemistry?

The simple case is that if enough suppression of our primary life force occurs then it will result in obvious physical changes. Simply put, if there are no “happy juices” – joy – flowing through the mind/emotional energy system there is no doubt that this will eventually show up in a biological/physical reflection of the same thing.

The physical happy juices/joy chemicals are the serotonin and noradrenaline that antidepressants try to provide.

But it all comes back to what is occurring in the mind first and foremost, not the chemistry of the brain and body. ‘Biochemical’ depression is humankind’s explanation from an age where emotional intelligence was lacking, and was the perfect excuse to avoid engaging with true healing through the use of medication.
